The Reimagined Tenison Park
Master Plan
The Dallas Park Board has approved a master plan for Samuell Grand Park that envisions a 9-hole golf course on the Tenison Glen site. The plan also cedes the rest of the land to the Loop hike & bike trail and a new nature preserve.
Additions to the Park
In addition to the par 3 course, DGI envisions a lit and double decked driving range, a new and improved community patio on the back side of the clubhouse, an urban golf park, improved parking and entry features, updated practice areas, and finally, recognition of Lee Trevino’s history at the park.
Funding
To make this dream a reality, DGI needs help from the great citizens of Dallas. DGI aims to raise funds to bring this vision to life through grants and private donations. All donations are tax deductible.
Par 3 Course
The entire lit par 3 course can be seen from the back porch of the existing clubhouse which now features a community patio & lounge area flanked by a new pavilion that overlooks both finishing holes and a new building or clubhouse extension that we can either use for events or just as a patio bar facility.
Drawing from the Samuell Grand Park Master Plan’s idea to remove southern portion of Tenison Parkway, the new par 3 footprint uses the land formerly occupied by the road as well as currently underutilized parkland to create a compact, welcoming, and unique golf experience that’s much easier to irrigate, light, and keep safe.
Additional Features
Double-Decker Driving Range
The range, at minimum, would also be lit and have technology like TopTracer integrated to allow for a more immersive and informative practice experience at certain bays. Ideally, we would also install a 2nd level to effectively double the amount of hitting bays. Between that and the lights, we could see up to double the output of the existing range.
Urban Golf Park
The urban golf park draws inspiration from the Ronny at the Texas Golf Association headquarters at PGA Frisco and creates an approachable and malleable place for the next generation to be introduced to the game of golf. The space can be free play or programmed as part of planned youth outreach and can even open up access to the range with dedicated youth hitting bays.
Parking
The parking lot would also be redone to add more parking spaces and accommodate overflow for the Shakespeare in the Park and other Samuell Grand uses as well as the increased traffic we believe this plan will generate.
Lee Trevino
Lastly and perhaps most importantly, we will highlight the great Lee Trevino, who spent many of his formative years on the Tenison East (now Glen) golf course learning how to love and play the game. While we don’t know exactly the appropriate way to do this yet (ideas include a statue, renaming something, a monument, etc.), we think it’s imperative that his legacy is preserved at Tenison.
